Police close packed Durdle Door beach as helicopters land at the scene

Police have closed a beach in Dorset after helicopters were called to the scene of an incident.

Pictures show thousands of tourists packed onto the sandy stretch at Durdle Door earlier today (May 30).

But police were forced to close the beach at around 5pm and disperse the crowds of people.

Officers say two helicopters were called to the scene to deal with two separate incidents, reports Somerset Live.

Police have also warned of traffic disruption in the area as thousands of tourists leave the beauty spot.

Dorset Echo has reported four people are injured after jumping into the water from cliffs.

A spokesman for Purbeck Police said: "Please avoid Durdle Door as the beach is now closed due to two helicopters having to land for two separate incidents.

"Expect high volumes of traffic as beach-goers depart from the scene."

A video of the scene earlier today taken from a boat off the coast has been posted to Twitter.

The video appears to show the full stretch of sand packed with sunbathing tourists.

The Twitter user labelled the lockdown an "absolute sham".

They wrote: "Hey Boris Johnson, does this look like social distancing is working to you?

"Durdle Door in Dorset right now... This 'lockdown' is an absolute sham."
