Police close off road and footpath after magnet fishers find grenade in canal

Police have closed off a road in Astley, after magnet fishers found a grenade in a nearby canal.

Higher Green Lane is shut between Peel Lane and Cleworth Close, while officers carry out their investigation.

The canal footpath is also taped off.

Police were called at around 4pm today (Sunday February 7) following the discovery.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesman told the Manchester Evening News: "At approximately 4pm today on the canal path near Higher Green Lane, Tyldesley, police received reports of a grenade being found by people magnet fishing.

"The incident is ongoing."

It's the second time in three weeks that a grenade has been found in the Wigan borough.

On January 18, an eight-year-old boy found a grenade in the River Douglas, in Shevington.
