Police close Gower car park because area was being 'used as race track'

Police were forced to close a car park at a popular beauty spot on the Gower Peninsula on Sunday evening - with officers claiming the area was being used as a 'race track'.

Officers from South Wales Police Swansea said they were called to Bracelet Bay to investigate reports of dangerous driving. Once on scene, police say they discovered large crowds had gathered in the area - which they say was was being "used as race track".

In a short statement on twitter issued at 9.37pm, police said: "Officers attend Bracelet Bay following reports of Dangerous Driving. Large crowds gathered as the area was used as a race track. Car park was temporarily closed whilst checks were carried out of over 100 vehicles as they left the car park."

In a tweet this morning, the South Wales Police Roads Policing Unit said that "other than the ongoing ASB [antisocial behaviour] issues, no other driving offences were identified.

"A positive engagement with the Car Club community," commented the traffic officers.

Bracelet Bay is a small bay on the south of the Gower Peninsula. It is the first bay after leaving Swansea Bay and rounding Mumbles Head. It has a Green Coast Award and is a much-loved spot for rockpooling and ice cream.
