Police close Clyde Tunnel after car fire sparks huge emergency response

Police have shut the Clyde Tunnel following a significant car fire earlier this evening.

Mercy crews raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at around 7pm.

The blaze has now closed off the tunnel to all vehicles in both directions, reports Glasgow Live.

No one is reported to have been injured in the incident, and the fire has now been extinguished.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told Glasgow Live : "We mobilised four appliances to reports of car on fire in the Clyde Tunnel after receiving the call at 7.09pm.

The fire is now extinguished and two appliances remain in attendance."

Glasgow City Council confirmed the road closure, with advice to follow tunnel operatives directions.

A statement from their traffic control team reads: "Due to a Vehicle fire the Clyde Tunnel is closed in both directions until further notice.

"Fire services are in attendance."

A Traffic Scotland spokesperson said: "A739 Clyde Tunnel Fire Northbound tunnel remains closed.

"Both northbound and southbound traffic are being directed through the southbound tunnel.

"Emergency services are on scene Traffic is gradually easing."
