Police close busy Kilmarnock road as heavy flooding hits Ayrshire

A busy Kilmarnock town centre road is closed tonight as police deal with heavy flooding.

West Shaw Street, next to Tesco Extra, which leads on to McLelland Drive is sealed off as emergency services respond to the river overflowing.

Eyewitnesses say there is a large hose in place which they believe will be pumping water from the road.

Motorists are being turned around by police and led away from the road which is causing havoc for those looking to get on to McLelland Drive from the south of the town, or the other side looking to get to Tesco.

A diversion is sending drivers all the way around the one-way system, which has roadworks at the top of John Finnie Street with only one of three lanes open.

There are a number of flood alerts around Ayrshire today, with one of the worst being the M77 northbound near Junction 6 which has plenty of water on the road.

Main Road in Glengarnock is also closed due to flooding.
