A suspected gun has been found in an alleyway in Anfield this afternoon.
A member of the public made the discovery just after 4pm and telephoned 999 to report it.
Officers descended on the scene close to the junction of Walton Breck Road and Robson Street to investigate.
Armed response vehicles were also dispatched to the area.
The alleyway has been cordoned off.
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said checks would be carried out to establish if the weapon was viable.
