Police closed A1(M) following a multi-vehicle crash at Washington

Emergency services attended a two-vehicle crash on the A1(M) at Washington.

Police were called to the southbound carriageway just before 9pm following a multi-vehicle collision.

Officers closed the carriageway with diversions being put in place for drivers.

A crew from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were also requested to attend the incident due to fluid leaking from one of the vehicles involved.

It is understood that there were no injuries as a result of the crash.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We received a call at 8.55pm to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1(M) at Washington services.

“It is understood there have been no injuries as a result.

“We requested assistance from the fire service due to fluid leaking from one of the vehicles involved.

“The A1(M) is closed near Washington services with a diversion in place to drivers while we await the recovery of the vehicles.”
