Police chief Simon Byrne to meet SDLP politicians over controversial Christmas tweet

A delegation from the SDLP is to meet with PSNI boss Simon Byrne over his controversial Christmas tweet.

The chief constable told his Twitter followers it was "great to meet the team policing Crossmaglen @PSNINMDown", adding "I take my hat off to colleagues policing such a unique part of @PoliceServiceNI. Their sense of duty & optimism is inspiring. Stay safe and thank you".

One of three images included in the message saw him standing with other officers, two of whom were holding Heckler & Koch G36 assault rifles fitted with infrared night-sights.

The post sparked anger at the time with some saying it was "ill judged" and harked back to darker times in Northern Ireland.

But CC Byrne responded by saying "sadly" it was the "stark reality of the policing environment they work in, tackling the severe terrorist threat".

It was not the first time he came in for criticism following comments in the role. He was forced to defend himself in September after suggesting those who used guns could have their children taken into state care.

A spokesperson for the SDLP said: "Councillor for Crossmaglen, Cllr Pete Byrne and SDLP Policing Spokesperson, Dolores Kelly MLA are meeting with PSNI Chief Constable, Simon Byrne tomorrow, regarding his Christmas tweet about South Armagh."

The meeting is to take place at 2pm at a Co Down police station.
