Police chases, raids and picking up litter - what coppers in Tameside have been up to this week

It's been a busy few days for police in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Raiding houses in search of drugs and chasing drivers attempting to pull a fast one - it's all been going on.

On Tuesday morning, curtain twitchers may have noticed a sudden influx of police on St Albans Avenue.

It was discovered several minutes later crashed at the corner of Abbey Hills Road after hitting a bollard and spinning off the road.

Two people - a man and a woman - ran from the car.

According to officers, the male driver fled into a nearby estate wearing what was described as a 'very distinctive, shiny, silver coat'.

But this driver wasn't the only one who didn't want to stop for police.

A second car - a red Skoda - started to pull over for ANPR officers on Lees Road, before the driver changed their mind.

Police chased the car through Ashton-under-Lyne to Droylsden, where the car was found dumped on Clockhouse Avenue.

Overall, police scanned more than 3,600 vehicles - around 80 of which were flagged down.

DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) also took part and handed out a number of prohibition notices to vehicles.

Dozens of residents joined police at Ashton Rugby Club for a community litter pick around the local area (GMP Ashton)

Ending Tuesday's day of action was a community 'spring clean' litter pick - supported by dozens of residents, as well as councillors, staff from office of Angela Rayner MP and Jigsaw Homes.

It started from Ashton Rugby Club and saw bags and bags of rubbish cleaned up from the St Alban's and Hartshead estate areas.

PC Steve Naylor, neighbourhood beat officer for Hurst ward, was behind the two days of action.

He said: "I just want to say a big thanks from me and the Hurst PCSOs for the assistance of everyone involved.

"Lots of intelligence gathered and lots of enforcement carried out.

"There was a great sense of community spirit and partnership working, which is exactly what a day of action is about."
