Police chase ends with officer injured, patrol car damaged

A 19-year-old Canberra man who allegedly injured a police officer and damaged a patrol car in a high-speed pursuit has been extradited to New South Wales.

Jake Eden Alexander, 19, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday over the police pursuit allegedly involving five men.

In the early hours of Friday morning, police in Queanbeyan approached a home where an allegedly stolen station wagon was parked in the driveway.

While they were standing at the front door, officers said, the garage door opened and a stolen Mercedes-Benz was reversed out and directly into the police wagon.

In the scramble to flee, the stolen car apparently tore the garage door from its hinges, and injured a police officer and clipped a police vehicle as it sped away.

Officers pursued the car, being driven without headlights as they had been destroyed in the escape.

The court heard the group of men was pursued across the border into the ACT, with the chase eventually abandoned in Macarthur.

Police said they saw four men flee the vehicle into a pine forest and the alleged driver, Alexander, crawl into the back seat.

They caught and arrested three of the five men wanted over the incident, including Alexander.

A statement of facts tendered in court said police believed Alexander was on ice at the time of the incident.

In court on Friday he was extradited to NSW to appear before Queanbeyan court on Saturday.

On Saturday two other men charged over the incident are expected to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.

Police said they were still searching for the other pair believed to be involved.
