Seven men charged over Melbourne pub brawl in which teen was killed

Victoria Police have charged seven men with affray, for their involvement in a large pub fight in Melbourne's north-east in which teenager Patrick Cronin was killed three years ago.

Mr Cronin, 19, was trying to pull a friend from the fight outside the Windy Mile Hotel in Diamond Creek in April 2016 when he was punched in the head.

He was taken to hospital but later died.

Andrew William Lee pleaded guilty to Mr Cronin's manslaughter death in 2017 and was sentenced to eight years' jail.

On Monday, police charged seven men over their involvement in the brawl.

Police said that they believed up to 30 people could have been involved.

The seven men charged on Monday are all in their thirties and from the outer north-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Mr Cronin's parents, Matt and Robyn Cronin, released a short statement to the media after the charges were laid in which they said they lived with the loss of their son "every day".

"Christmas should be a time of celebration for the family and here we are more than three years later, and we still haven't received closure," the statement said.

"It's something we live with every day, the loss of Pat.

"This is why we've set up the Pat Cronin Foundation — to educate and make people aware that these acts of cowardly violence should never be tolerated.

"We're pleased to see charges being laid today. We know we need to wait for the right process to follow, but we look forward to an outcome."

The charged men are due to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrates' Court on May 5, 2020.
