Police charge man with second robbery

Raymond Terrace courthouse.

DETECTIVES say a man accused of holding up a store at Salamander Bay armed with a deodorant can is also responsible for an armed robbery at an Anna Bay service station four days earlier.

Daniel James Cranney, 21, was arrested on Friday after allegedly attempting to hold up a business in Soldiers Point Road, Salamander Bay.

Police allege he entered the store about 2.15pm and threatened a 39-year-old female employee with a deodorant can and demanded money.

But when the employee activated the alarm system, Mr Cranney fled empty handed, police allege.

He was detained briefly by two members of the public but managed to escape.

Police say they found Mr Cranney hiding behind a bin in nearby Foreshore Drive and arrested him.

He was later charged with attempted armed robbery and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and refused bail by police to appear in Newcastle Bail Court on Saturday, where he was granted strict conditional bail to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday.

But before he could appear, detectives went to a home at Salamander Bay on Monday and arrested Mr Cranney again, charging him with armed robbery for a hold-up at an Anna Bay service station on September 9.

On that occasion police allege it was Mr Cranney who entered a service station on Nelson Bay Road and threatened a 59-year-old female employee with a knife.

They say Mr Cranney fled the scene with cash and cigarettes.

After his arrest on Monday, police again refused Mr Cranney's bail and he appeared in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday where his bail was formally revoked and the matter was adjourned to the same court on November 11.
