Police charge man who allegedly failed to stop at Newry check point

A man has been charged with a number of offences after allegedly failing to stop for police at a check point near Newry.

Gardai are reported to have told the PSNI that a red VW Golf was heading towards the border that may have been involved in an incident in the Republic.

A 40-year-old was subsequently arrested in the Ferryhill Park area around 7.50pm on Friday, May 22.

He is accused of driving with excess alcohol on breath, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, no L plates displayed, unaccompanied L driver and using a motor vehicle without insurance.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The charges are in relation to an incident in which a car failed to stop for police and the male arrested in the Ferryhill Park area of Newry on Friday 22nd May.

“The male was also charged with two counts of dangerous driving, three counts of handling stolen goods, possessing article with blade or point in public place and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

“These charges relate to an incident on Sunday, 4th June 2017, in which a police vehicle was rammed at the Edenappa Road area of Jonesborough.

“He is due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court on Monday, 25 May via videolink.

“As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”
