Police charge man after alleged hate crime incident in Omagh

A man has been charged with a total of eight offences following an alleged hate crime incident on Saturday.

The alleged incident is reported to have taken place at a house in St Patrick's Terrace in Omagh on Saturday February 1 at around 10.25pm.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Detectives have charged a 50-year-old man with a total of eight offences including making threats to kill, grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, criminal damage and harassment.

"He is expected to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday 3 February.

"The charges follow [an alleged] hate crime incident at a house in St Patrick's Terrace in Omagh on Saturday night."

It was reported that a man armed with a bat had attacked the house, shouted racial slurs and attempted to force his way past the 34-year-old male occupant to get inside the property.

Police say a 22-year-old woman and three-year-old boy who were inside the home were so in fear that they jumped from a first floor window to try to get away.

The woman sustained pelvic injuries that will require surgery. The child was not harmed.

As is usual procedure the charges will be reviewed to the PPS.
