Police catch driver hogging the middle lane of the M20 - they were watching Love Island

A driver was caught by police because he was hogging the middle line of a motorway... only to find he was watching Love Island.

The unknown motorist was travelling down the M20 in Kent when he was pulled over over after officers spotted him using his phone.

Kent Police Roads said the driver was stopped between Junction 2 near Sevenoaks and Junction 1 near Dartford on the busy motorway.

He was then issued a traffic offence report (TOR) for careless driving.

The driver was hogging the middle lane of the M20 in Kent (PA)

Posting a tweet from Kent Police’s Roads Policing Unit, an officer said: "Driver seen in lane 2 of 3 on the M20 jct 2-1 for no reason.

"Pulled alongside him and appears he was watching Love Isalnd on his smartphone which he felt was fine to do.

"Driver issued with a TOR for careless driving."

They finished the tweet with the hashtag: 'Who's Bantering Now,' alongside a very appropriate gif of Tom Hanks looking perplexed with the caption 'Really?'

The tweet garnered a lot of attention from non-Love Island fans who suggested that the choice of viewing was also a crime.

"What a plonker.. it's NEVER OK to watch love island," said one.

Another commented: "Should be a minimum 10 years just for watching Love Island."

When issued with a TOR, it is then submitted to the Criminal Justice Department who decide the most appropriate way to deal with the alleged offences.

These can be issued instead of a fixed penalty notice but do come with consequences.

There are two types of motoring offence for which a TOR can be given - non-endorsable offences and endorsable offences.

For example, using a mobile phone whilst driving  is an endorsable offence which can carry fines between £100 and £300 as well as three and six penalty points on your licence.
