Police catch day-trippers travelling from Bristol to Tenby to 'look at the beach'

Day-trippers who drove from Bristol to Tenby to "look at the beach" have been caught by police and reported for non-essential travel.

On Friday, Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit officers routinely stopped a white Seat Leon at a petrol station in Pentlepoir near Saundersfoot.

Occupants of the car, which was registered and insured to the Manchester area, said they had "just finished work" and were going to Tenby to "look at the beach".

This was not deemed to be an essential journey under the current lockdown guidance and both the passenger and driver were reported for non-essential travel and sent back the way they had come.

The previous day, campers who drove from Hereford to Tenby for a night under the stars in their tent were fined over £400 and sent home.

The occupants of this car also wanted a close look at the beach (Dyfed-Powys Police)

After removing warning signs from a beach car park, the occupants of the car proceeded to get themselves stuck in the sand. They were reported for non-essential travel and fined.

Police forces across Wales have been sharing examples of the excuses they have been given by motorists flouting the government's lockdown rules recently.

For weeks, government guidance has stipulated that people should only leave their homes for very specific reasons to limit the spread of coronavirus. They are:

  • infrequent shopping for essentials
  • one form of exercise a day
  • for a medical need or to care for the vulnerable
  • work if it cannot be done from home.
