Police catch and fine 'several groups' of people who travelled miles to swim and picnic at Wigan quarry

Groups of people have been caught travelling miles for a day out at a disused former quarry in Wigan.

Police in Appley Bridge say they have been forced to fine a number of people who have ignored the lockdown rules to "swim and picnic" at the East Quarry.

Officers say the travellers are coming from as far away as Southport and Merseyside and are driving to the area with people not from their own household.

Emergency services have put particular emphasis on stopping people from swimming at the quarry in recent years following the tragic death of 13-year-old Miracle Godson, who drowned there in 2015.

A spokesman for Skelmersdale Police said: "Abandoned quarries are not safe places to swim at the best of times but trespassing to swim or picnic, in the current climate, is socially irresponsible and puts many peoples lives at risk.

"Over the last two days officers from our neighbourhood and response teams have removed several groups from the quarry at Appley Bridge.

"The majority have been from Liverpool or Southport and in groups of people outside of their own household. This is clearly in breach of the Government's regulations.

"Lancashire Police will continue its policy of engaging, explaining and encouraging these rules prior to issuing any fines.

"Unfortunately, some of these groups have failed to grasp the seriousness of the situation or comply with officers, so a group from Merseyside were issued fines on Tuesday for attending the quarry and a further 3 people yesterday."

Residents have been told to expect more officers patrolling the quarry in the coming days.
