Police cars line up outside the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport in show of support for staff

Police officers demonstrated their appreciation for NHS staff by gathering outside a hospital and breaking into applause.

Gwent Police officers made the gesture of support to staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport on Thursday evening.

Several police cars were lined up along the car park of the hospital with lights flashing as officers got out to applaud medical staff working in the worst-affected area in the UK Covid-19 crisis.

Chief Constable Pam Kelly tweeted to say she was, "proud of our NHS and delighted that we @gwentpolice are demonstrating our thanks outside one of our local hospitals where staff and patients can see that we are thinking of them".

Hospital staff and members of the public shared pictures and video of the moment on social media.

People across the UK took part in the third weekly clap for NHS workers at 8pm on Thursday evening.

Videos shared on social media showed streets filled with people clapping, cheering, and playing musical instruments for the third week running.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: "Tonight our officers showed their support and appreciation for our NHS colleagues.

"Working together with our partners we are tackling this health crisis."
