Police carry out vehicle stop-checks in Swansea's Fabian Way to enforce coronavirus rules

Stop checks have been taking place along Fabian Way as police look to clamp down on people travelling "without reasonable excuse" following the introduction of the Welsh Government's lockdown measures.

South Wales Police said it would be utilising additional powers to conduct random vehicle checks over the Christmas period, following the Welsh Government's move to place the whole of Wales under alert level four coronavirus restrictions.

Officers have recently been spotted along the busy Swansea road, in a lay-by not far from the new Sancta Maria Hospital, following the introduction of the new powers which came into force at 7am on Tuesday, December 22 and will be reviewed on Monday, January 4.

Under Alert Level 4, the public are expected to stay at home and not travel without a reasonable excuse.

The restrictions will be relaxed for Christmas Day, when the public will be permitted to travel to mix with one other household.

A statement from South Wales Police reads: "In order to support the national effort to help slow the spread of the virus, and assist in enforcing the restrictions, our officers have been given authority to stop any vehicle travelling within the force area.

"Checks will be conducted to ascertain the reason for travel.

"Our officers will continue to adopt the national four Es approach – engaging with the public, explaining the restrictions and encouraging voluntary compliance. However, those believed to be in blatant breach of the rules can expect to be subject to enforcement action."

Officers have been conducting the traffic stops force wide.

On Tuesday, 76 vehicles were stopped, with the vast majority able to demonstrate compliance with the legislation. Seven drivers were issued with warnings, while one fixed penalty notice was issued.

WalesOnline asked for the number of people who had been caught flouting the rules at Fabian Way, but South Wales Police said the figures would be released at an "appropriate time".
