One man has been denied bail while another remains on the run after a police car was stolen in Canberra yesterday evening.

Last night, an ACT Policing car, complete with a rear cage, was stolen during an attempted arrest by ACT police officers of two people suspected of having stolen another car.

Police said they had pulled over two men in a suspected stolen car when one escaped, stealing the police vehicle and driving off, before abandoning it and stealing another car to escape once more.

The second man, George George, 32, was arrested and charged with riding in a stolen car.

He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning via video link and became angry when his bail application was refused, thumping the table, yelling and swearing.

All three stolen vehicles involved in the incident have since been recovered, with police finding the final vehicle abandoned in the inner-north suburb of O'Connor a short time later.

But Mr George's co-accused remains on the run, with a police search underway.

Detective Inspector Stephen Ladd said after stealing the police car and fleeing the scene, the second man allegedly carjacked a Suzuki hatchback, "dragging" her out of the car.

"Police do believe we know the identity of the second person, however, we are still trying to locate him."

Detective Inspector Ladd said he would also "hate to speculate" on the circumstances surrounding how the police vehicle was left unlocked or the man was able to drive it away.

"What I can tell you, based on the information I have is that there is no breach of duty or any code of conduct issues identified at this stage, however that will be subject to the ongoing investigation," he said.
