Police car bursts into flames during morning rush-hour traffic forcing full closure of the M6

A police car burst into flames during morning rush-hour traffic on the M6 northbound.

All lanes had to be closed on the motorway between Preston and Lancaster at junction 32.

The vehicle caught fire at around 9.30am on Wednesday morning.

Lancashire Police confirmed that nobody was hurt during the incident.

The cause of the blaze is unknown.

The car is now on the hard shoulder between junction 32 at Broughton Interchange and junction 33 at Lancaster South.

One lane has reopened, but two remain closed while oil is cleaned from the carriageway.

Highways England warn that the closures could be in place until around 12pm.

Traffic is currently queuing with congestion backing up to junction 31A at Longridge.

The A6 is also struggling as traffic is using this as the diversion route.
