Police car allegedly rammed, officer injured during pursuit

A driver has been charged after allegedly ramming a police vehicle and injuring an officer during a pursuit on the Central Coast.

Officers from Brisbane Water Police District noticed a Holden Commodore doing burnouts near the intersection of Henry Parry Drive and the Pacific Highway, Wyoming, about 4.25am on Monday.

They tried to stop the vehicle and a pursuit soon began.

During the chase, it is alleged the Holden rammed the marked police vehicle several times, causing extensive damage to the driver's side.

The driver and sole occupant of the police car, a male senior constable, sustained head and rib injuries but was able to exit the car.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Gosford Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The Holden driver stopped on Maidens Brush Road and fled on foot.

Additional police responded and commenced a search of the surrounding area.

With assistance from the Dog Unit, a 41-year-old Umina man was found hiding inside another vehicle on Pecan Street just before 6.15am.

He was taken to hospital under police guard for mandatory testing.

The man was later charged with seven counts, including

  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
  • Not stop vehicle when directed to do so
  • Police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly
  • Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
  • Enter inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse (x2)
  • Enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner
