Police called twice to hotel after brawl involving 20 people

One man is in custody after a brawl at a hotel involving around 20 people and allegedly linked to a wedding.

Officers from Cheshire Police were first called to the Holiday Inn on Wood Lane in Runcorn at 12.14am on Tuesday as trouble broke out, and returned again to the premises at 9.35am. A force spokesman said no-one was believed to have suffered any “serious” injuries during last night’s “large-scale disturbance” and this morning's attendance was described as only for an "incident".

Last night, police arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of affray and he remains in custody. When the ECHO attended the scene at around 10.15am on Tuesday, seven patrol cars, a van and a dog unit were present with most of the vehicles parked outside the entry on Wood Lane with others outside close to the main vehicle entries on Wood Lane and Ashbrook Avenue.

Two further patrol cars and a second van arrived a short time later.

A wedding-style horse-carriage and horse box were also present in the car park, with a Rolls-Royce also approaching from the Palacefields lights as the ECHO was leaving.

Around eight police officers entered the hotel while the ECHO was at the scene, with some emerging to liaise with colleagues waiting outside. A witness told the ECHO the incident was related to trouble involving a group of wedding guests, and that a fight had broken out.

Around 20 people were believed to be involved, with a 22-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of affray and is currently in police custody.

"There were no reports of any serious injuries."

Following the return to the hotel in the morning, the spokesman said: “At 9.35am officers were called to a hotel on Wood Lane, Runcorn, following reports of an incident. Police swiftly attended the scene and spoke to those involved.

“Officers are remaining on scene while those in attendance disperse.”
