Police called to school after pupils 'threatened with BB gun' on nearby street

Police were called to a primary school in Tameside after pupils were reportedly threatened with a BB gun.

The incident at Silver Springs Primary Academy in Stalybridge on Wednesday morning sparked an 'invacuation' of the playground, and all children were rushed inside.

It is understood young pupils were approached by several teenage boys - one of them had a BB gun and started making threats.

Academy principal Deborah Mason said the incident itself happened on Ambleside, the road that runs alongside the school, and stressed it was not on school property.

GMP confirmed officers attended. Stalybridge Inspector Andy Holden said the BB gun was brightly coloured and was not perceived by any witnesses to be a real gun. It was in someone's pocket and not taken out at any point during the incident.

He said those responsible had been identified and action would be taken.

A statement from Silver Springs Primary Academy read: "Just before school started on Tuesday morning, we were alerted to an incident off the school site that led us to take the precaution of instigating our 'invacuation' of the children on the playground.

"Staff followed school procedure and all children were brought in quickly, calmly and safely.

"The police were informed immediately and by 9.08am we were informed that the situation had concluded.

"We thank all parents, children and staff for their co-operation."
