Police called to railway station as two men armed with knives in 'altercation' with taxi driver

Police made two arrests and recovered a knife after a disturbance at a railway station.

The suspects fled onto the tracks but were chased by officers and detained.

The wooden-handled knife, with an eight inch-long blade, was subsequently recovered and retained as evidence.

Both men remained in custody for questioning on Friday.

Police were called to Wigan North Western railway station to reports of 'two males with knives' involved in an altercation with a taxi driver, Greater Manchester Police said.

That was at 1.30am on Friday.

The force said specialist officers carrying Tasers attended.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The men were arrested on suspicion of railway trespass, affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

 

No ages for them have been revealed.

GMP Wigan West posted details of the arrest on Facebook.

Officers said: "At 01:30hrs this morning D relief officers including specially trained officers with Taser responded to reports of two males with knives involved in an altercation with a taxi driver near to Wigan North Western Train Station.

"The two suspects fled onto the railway at Wigan North Western station, but were subsequently detained and arrested for trespass on the railway.

"Having become clear that the two had discarded their weapons during the pursuit an extensive search was made and an 8 inch-long knife was recovered.

"Both males were further arrested on suspicion, for offences, of affray and possession of an offensive weapon and remain in custody for questioning."

No further details were revealed.
