Police called to party held by group of young people during the weekend

A group of young people held an outdoor party in the Swansea area during the weekend.

Police officers attended the gathering, in the Melin Mynach area of Gorseinon, on Saturday, October 10, following reports from concerned residents.

While up to 30 people can meet outdoors under Welsh Government coronavirus guidelines, social distancing must be observed at all times.

Melin Mynach is situated directly opposite Penyrheol School and leisure centre.

One resident, referring to local lockdowns like the one in place in Llanelli, said: “I don’t understand why I would be fined hundreds to visit my elderly grandparents, from a distance, because they live in Llanelli, but youngsters can meet up with loads of their mates and have no repercussions."

Another added: “You can’t but help feel sorry for them because we were all young once, but it’s not safe for them to mingle and they don’t seem to understand this until one of them gets it (coronavirus)."

The party followed reports of gatherings of large groups of young people in the town earlier in the evening, particularly near the Asda store.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “We were made aware of a gathering with music taking place in ‘The Mill’ at about 6.40pm on October 10.

“Officers attended and spoke and dispersed a group of around 20 young people who were spoken to regarding their behaviour.

“We would urge parents to take an interest in where their young people are and speak to them about anti-social behaviour and the current Covid-19 regulations."
