Police were called to an incident that saw hundreds "loud, revving" cars in a residential area with families".

Cars gathered at the car park at Pengam Green Tesco, in what was believed to be a "car meet".

Similar meets have taken place in Newport recently, and one of the organisers has spoken out against the few troublemakers in the group.

South Wales Police tweeted to to say: "We are at the scene of an gathering involving a numbers of cars in Splott."

"We are actively patrolling and will robustly deal with offences."

Gary Bennett who lives near the Tesco store on Eastern Bay Road, said there were "hundreds of people and cars" and they'd been there since around 5pm.

It's the first time Mr Bennett and his neighbours have experienced this but he explained that people parked on bends, filling the streets around the car park and parked in front of residents' driveways.

Mr Bennett said: "The car park was full and they were parking in the streets nearby, one police car and two PCSOs.

"It's still going on now [9pm], cars are currently doing doughnuts."

He added the numbers were down to about 50/60 cars by 9pm.

By 9.15pm all the cars had left the car park.
