Police called to fitness class attended by 'about 30 people' in Bristol park

Police were called to reports of an exercise class taking place in a south Bristol green space attended by "about 30 people".

Officers from Avon and Somerset Police arrived at Greville Smyth Park in Ashton Court at 7.15pm on Tuesday, June 9, where they found a group engaging in an organised training session.

A spokesperson for the force said those involved "vacated the area" soon after officers arrived at the scene.

He said: "We were called at approximately 7.15pm on Tuesday, June 9 to reports of a group of about 30 people engaging in a fitness programme.

"Officers attended and found a small group of people who subsequently vacated the area.

"As a force we continue to engage with the public, explain the rules around the public health guidelines and encourage them to comply."

Government guidelines state that the risk of the coronavirus being passed on to others outdoors is considered to be low - providing people adhere to social distancing measures by keeping two metres apart at all times.

Reports on social media suggest the people who took part in the outdoor exercise class at Greville Smyth were not two metres apart.

Someone posted in a Facebook community group to say they were "completely ignoring social distancing".

In England people can leave their home to exercise and spend time outdoors for recreation with members of their household, or in groups of up to six people from outside their household.

The number of people involved in this fitness class was said to be far greater than the Government's advised limit.
