Police called to 'disturbance' at meeting to select Labour candidate for Nottingham East constituency

Police officers were called to a "disturbance" at a Labour Party selection meeting in Carrington.

The meeting took place on Sunday, October 27 and was being held to determine who would become Labour's candidate for the Nottingham East constituency.

A report was made to the police just before 1.20pm after a man was said to be "causing a disturbance and refusing to leave" the Indian Community Centre Association (ICCA), which is based in The Atrium building, in Hucknall Road.

No arrests were made and Nottinghamshire Police said the incident was resolved "peacefully".

A spokesman said: “We received a report just before 1.20pm yesterday (Sunday 27 October 2019) that a man was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave a community centre on Hucknall Road, Sherwood.

“Officers attended and spoke to the man. The incident was resolved peacefully and no arrests were made.”

Nadia Whittome, who grew up in The Meadows, won the candidate contest against Dales ward Councillor Neghat Khan with 234 votes to 203.

The constituency is currently represented by Independent Group for Change MP Chris Leslie, who defected from the Labour Party back in February this year.

The East Midlands Labour Party said it would not be providing an official statement regarding the incident.
