Police called to deal with party involving group of Irish holidaymakers in Portugal

Portuguese police are busy dispersing crowds of British and Irish holidaymakers partying in the Algarve.

GNR police were called to break up a party on Wednesday night in Praia do Garrão in Almancil.

A number of youngsters were reportedly refusing to leave a restaurant after having a number of drinks.

One young Irish man told the national broadcaster in a TV report that he and "maybe 50" others were out there on holiday.

Martin Kerr, a restaurant owner in the area, told Portuguese broadcaster RTP: "With the current restrictions, we have to respect the laws and, after a few drinks, some of them forget."

Portugal is not currently on Ireland's green list and anyone travelling there would have to quarantine for two weeks after returning to Ireland.

The country currently has an average of 200 new coronavirus cases per day after a recent outbreak.

Restrictions remain in place in the country with gatherings limited to 20 people.

Bars, cafes and nightclubs are all open but have to operate with strict guidelines.
