Police called to clear huge car meet in Sainsbury's car park

Police were forced to issue a dispersal notice after hundreds of vehicles arrived in Weston-super-Mare for a car meet.

Several hundred vehicles travelled to the resort on Sunday evening, filling the car park at Sainsbury’s supermarket in Worle.

Nearby car parks for McDonalds and other stores such as Argos were also packed with cars.

The vast number of cars meant some were forced to park on neighbouring residential streets.

The meet up was organised by the South West Convoy and Beyond City Car Meets UK.

It was heralded as the ‘biggest SW car meet ever’ and advertised widely on social media.

Police were called to deal with the gathering and a number of drivers were reported for traffic offences.

One car was seized by officers and taken off the road.

All sites in the area were cleared by midnight.

A police spokesman said: “From about 6pm on Sunday 21 June police received calls about a car meet at Sainsbury's in Worle, Weston-super-Mare.

“Several hundred vehicles were involved, filling the car parks the supermarket and neighbouring stores and spilling onto surrounding streets.

“Officers including specialist roads policing officers and special constables attended.

“At least five drivers were reported for traffic offences, while one driver's car was found to be unsafe and taken off the road.

“A dispersal zone was put in place at 9pm, enabling officers to ensure most of the vehicles had left by midnight.”
