Police called to break up 'party of 150 people' at the Meadows in Edinburgh

Police were called to break up a gathering of 150 students at a park in Edinburgh.

Cops were forced to move along the large gathering at the Meadows on Sunday after locals were shocked to see the crowds forming for the unsocially distanced get together.

Residents told how "dozens upon dozens of people" had gathered at the park and said they couldn't get into nearby shops because of "hordes of young people", reports Edinburgh Live.

A resident described the "huge party" saying: "Dozens upon dozens of people streaming down my street some in groups of 30 at 10pm."

Another shocked local added: "I drove through the Meadows about 5.30pm.

"Hordes of young people. I still won’t go into a shop, a supermarket, a restaurant, in safety, because of their blatant selfishness.

Police Scotland Inspector Norman Towler said: “Officers attended at The Meadows in Edinburgh, in the evening of Sunday, 13 September, following a report of a group of around 150 people gathered in the area.

"On Police attendance the groups moved on voluntarily without any Police engagement.”

“Regular patrols cover the Meadows and surrounding area and officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance and encourage compliance.

"We will use enforcement as a last resort only where there is a clear breach of the legislation."
