Police called to an assault in Birkenhead town centre

There was a significant police presence on one of Birkenhead town centre's main streets this afternoon following an assault.

Pictures taken at the scene by an eyewitness showed police parked at the side of Conway Street, with unconfirmed reports of a youth being either stabbed or slashed.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police later confirmed there had been "an assault" resulting in "minor injuries."

It was the second major incident in the town centre this afternoon - earlier a man was arrested after a police chase .

Police began pursuing a male at about 3.30pm from Argyle Street, a spokesman for the force said, before he was arrested on Kingsland Road about five minutes later.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police confirmed officers were assisted by a helicopter in the chase, which ended on Kingsland Road.

After the "short pursuit" the spokesman confirmed a male was arrested.
