Police called out after 'grenade scare' in Southport

Police were called out to Southport following reports that a hand grenade had been found in a back garden.

Officers were called out to a house on Lulworth Road in the Birkdale area of the town at around 8.40am today following reports that a device had been found in a back garden.

Police have said the device was a plastic toy. They have said the call alerting them was made in 'good faith.'

A police spokesman said: to the ECHO : "We attended the back garden of a property in Southport today (Monday 27 July) after it was reported what appeared to be hand grenade had been found.

"The report was made in good faith just before 8.40am, and police attended the property on Lulworth Road but on inspection the grenade was found to be a plastic toy.
