Police called in as Welsh Government try to stop English football team who've been allowing fans in stadium

Chester Football Club have revealed police spoke to them for staging two matches in front of fans over the Christmas period.

English team Chester say police have got involved following a directive from the Welsh Government and that they have been warned they may breach Covid-19 rules here if they continue to play in front of spectators.

The matter is being dealt with by lawyers and comes as Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford continues to insist fans can't attend sporting events in Wales.

Cardiff City and Swansea City must play FA Cup matches behind closed doors this weekend, while doubts persist over whether Wales' rugby aces will be permitted fans at the Principality Stadium for their Six Nations home fixtures.

A number of high-profile players are backing calls for Wales' games to be moved to England, where supporters are still in attendance, with Louis-Rees Zammit, Josh Adams and Liam Williams making their views known. Wales legend turned top pundit Jonathan Davies says the same thing, amid talks the WRU are considering Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a venue for their February clash with Scotland.

The issue with Chester FC has arisen because their Deva Stadium home is right on the border with England, but just on the Welsh side.

They had crowds in excess of 2,000 for recent National League North matches with Fylde and Telford and are down to host Brackley Town on Saturday week.

A club statement on Friday read: "This morning Chester Football Club was invited to a meeting with representatives of North Wales Police, Flintshire County Council, Cheshire Police and Cheshire West & Chester Council.

"During this meeting, the club was given a joint letter on behalf of North Wales Police and Flintshire County Council which outlines potential breaches of Welsh Coronavirus Regulations at our fixtures on December 28 and January 2.

"It also states the club may commit further potential breaches if it continues to play home fixtures with crowds while the current restrictions in Wales remain in place.

"We were informed this was based upon direction from the Welsh Government that the premises of Chester Football Club are governed by the Welsh Regulations. The Welsh Government was not represented at the meeting.

"It was agreed that parties would seek further legal advice given the complex issues and future implications of any outcome.

"We will provide a further update to our supporters as soon as we are able to."

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "Chester Football Club’s stadium is in Wales therefore Welsh regulations apply.

"As the enforcing authorities Flintshire County Council and North Wales Police are dealing with the matter."
