Police called in after huge blaze rips through Skelmersdale bank

Police and fire chiefs have launched an investigation into a huge blaze that tore through a derelict bank building last night.

Flames ripped through the premises on High Street in Skelmersdale from about 7.30pm on Tuesday, which could be seen for miles around.

Up to eight engines from Merseyside, Lancashire and Manchester were needed as fire crews spent several hours tackling the blaze at its height.

Dramatic pictures and video of the scene show huge plumes of smoke billowing from the massive flames at the site.

This morning, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had launched a joint investigation with their police colleagues into the cause of the fire.

The blaze at the former Co-op Bank has been extinguished.
