Police called in after Glasgow canal clean-up operation uncovers firearm

A firearm has been fished out the Forth and Clyde Canal during a clean-up operation in north Glasgow.

Police descended on the scene after being made aware of the discovery at Applecross Basin in the Hamiltonhill area along from Speirs Wharf around 12pm yesterday afternoon.

They confirmed that the item was made safe and that enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

The find was made by a member of the group Glasgow Magnet Fishing, who had earlier issued an open invitation for people to join them in the organised canal clean-up.

It came days after magneteers had previously fished out an array of knives from the canal at the basin, as well as what appears to be some sort of sword, an axe and a meat cleaver.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: Police were called around 12.20pm on Saturday, 22 August, 2020, after what appears to be a firearm was recovered from the canal near Applecross Street, Glasgow.

"Officers attended and the item was made safe. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
