Police called after shoppers trapped in HUGE traffic jam at Tesco car park

Police were called to a Tesco Superstore in Formby after a huge traffic jam blocked the entire car park.

Customers were forced into a massive queue at the supermarket on Altcar Road at around 1pm, that left many shoppers frustrated and waiting in their cars for almost 30 minutes.

It is believed that the queue ran from the car park onto the Formby Bypass and that drivers had difficulty passing through the nearby traffic lights.

A video on Twitter showed the scale of the traffic jam inside the car park.

Helen Carr, took to social media after giving up her attempts to get out of her parking space outside Tesco.

Tweeting at Tesco , Merseyside Police and Sefton Council , Helen said: "This is Tesco Formby carpark right now.

"After 20 minutes of not even being able to get out of my parking space I gave up.

"PLEASE come and sort the traffic lights out."

In response to Helen's tweet, a spokesperson from Tesco replied to her off the company's official Twitter account and explained that police had been called.

The tweet said: "Hi Helen, I'm really sorry to see this I can imagine how frustrating this would be.

"I've spoken with store who have advised the police have been contacted. I hope that you get out safely."

Helen then replied to inform the spokesperson that she finally managed to get our through the jam.

She said: "Thank you. I escaped eventually. The staff members I spoke to were lovely, and as frustrated as we shoppers were!"

Merseyside Police confirmed that officers had been called to the store but the incident was deemed not a police matter.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council told the ECHO that the queues were caused by an issue with the traffic light and that the problem is being looked at.

In a statement, the council said: "There is a fault with the traffic lights here. The department are resolving the matter ASAP.

"They have advised this will take around 1 week."
