Police called after fight breaks out outside Shields Road takeaway in Byker

Police raced to Shields Road after a fight broke out in the middle of the street.

Pictures show four police vehicles - including a van - parked up at the bottom of the Byker street, near Wetherspoons and Wilko.

ChronicleLive understands that police were told as many as seven people were involved in Tuesday's altercation.

However, when they arrived, it turned out the fracas involved two men who were moved on and faced no formal police action.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 5.50pm yesterday we received a report of a large disturbance outside a takeaway on Shields Road, Byker.

“Officers attended the scene where they found two males involved in an altercation.

"Officers intervened and spoke to the men involved and they were moved on from the scene."

One witness claimed officers spent around 10 minutes dealing with the fight, before leaving the scene.
