Police called about suspected car meet on Clifton Downs as locals report 'revving and screeching'

Police have been called to a suspected car meet on Clifton Downs this evening (August 15) amid reports from locals of "revving and screeching" in the surrounding areas.

Police confirmed that the force had been called at 8.10pm this evening with someone suspecting a car meet was happening, with plenty of vehicles having been reported heading towards the Downs.

The force further confirmed that officers had been stationed in the area in response to the call to manage any situation that may occur.

Cars have been reported travelling up Ladies Mile and Whiteladies Road over the course of the evening, sparking further concerns over a meet taking place.

Some residents of surrounding areas have taken to Twitter regarding "revving and screeching" of cars being heard in surrounding areas.

Almost a year ago, police attended a gathering of over 300 motorists on the Downs.

During the August 2020 meet, drivers were reported to be driving dangerously on the roads surrounding the Downs and endangering public safety.

Avon and Somerset Police have previously warned that dangerous driving would incur action against those responsible.

Police tweeted at the time of that incident: "Public safety is our utmost priority and action will be taken against anyone found to be breaking the law or endangering others."

Police have not confirmed whether any enforcement action has taken place yet tonight.
