Police called about groups of people gathering at popular route through Newark

Police say they have been called numerous times about groups gathering at a popular cycling route in Nottinghamshire.

The problems have arisen at the Sustrans route at Newark, according to the force.

Sustrans routes are popular with walkers and cyclists and are located across the country for people to enjoy.

However, police say some people are breaking the rules on the route which goes through the Nottinghamshire town by gathering in groups.

Officers will be patrolling the area and are calling on the public to follow the government restrictions enforced during the national lockdown.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said: "In recent days Nottinghamshire Police have received a number of calls reporting people gathering in groups whilst using the Sustrans route in Newark.

"Whilst we expect some of these groups will be families, not all of these will be from the same household or support bubble.

"Whilst we encourage those who can to use the Sustrans as an ideal route to take daily exercise we respectfully ask that those using the area are mindful of the social distancing rules.

"Thank you for your ongoing support and compliance."
