Police call for more government money to tackle 'irresponsible' student house parties

Nottinghamshire's Police and Crime Commissioner said coronavirus restrictions have been "changed on an almost daily basis"

Paddy Tipping said he has entered discussions with Home Office ministers and officials over the way the situation has been handled across Nottinghamshire.

The county entered into Tier 3 on Friday, November 30, only to be told the next day that these plans would be scrapped for a national lockdown on Thursday, November 5.

Mr Tipping originally called for an extra £1m to fund the police under Tier 3 restrictions, mainly so that officers had the resources to attend large house parties and gatherings.

Officers have expressed concerns that they are being pulled away from fighting crime, and putting criminals behind bars, to attend these large house parties.

Despite police issuing a number of £10,000 fines to those who flout rules and hold parties of more than 30 people, there has not been a decline in gatherings.

At the weekend, 83 fines were issued, mainly to students.

Mr Tipping said: "Following the Prime Minister's statement, I've been in discussions with Home Office ministers and officials.

"I've made it very clear that Nottinghamshire residents believe that Covid-19 and its accompanying restrictions have been badly handled.

"Put bluntly, information and plans have changed on an almost daily basis.

"Nevertheless, I have also made it clear that, as in earlier this year, Nottinghamshire people will follow the instructions.

"Clearly, it's in everyone's interests to act responsibly and respectfully. As a matter of urgency, I've asked that clear guidelines are issued for next Sunday's Remembrance Day events. It's important to mark it in the best way possible.

"I've also asked for extra short-term funding for the police so that they have the resources to tackle things like the irresponsible house parties for example.

"Finally, and most importantly, I've demanded a clear map and timetable to come out of this week's new lockdown. I'm keen to ensure we all have the best and safest Christmas we can and that next year is much better than current one."
