Police find large group in street as man is taken unwell after 'altercation'

Police have dismissed claims that officers broke up a party over the weekend.

Almost two dozen officers and four paramedics were called to the mass gathering in the street in Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland.

At first it was feared they had emerged from a Easter bank holiday party at a nearby house.

However, it's now been established that residents had rushed out of their homes after seeing a man unwell in the street after an 'altercation'.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "A man became unwell and needed medical assistance.

"Officers assisting the man until the ambulance arrived requested support from nearby units as some people began to approach to look at the incident, they were told to return home by police."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call about 9.15pm from the police to help assess a patient.

"On our arrival the patient refused treatment, so we left."

Lockdown restrictions due to deadly Covid-19 have been written into UK law which states that people should only leave home for specific reasons to help halt the spread of the virus and save lives.

* This story has been updated to clarify that residents in the street had come out of their own homes, rather than one house party.
