Police break up group of 50 boozers drinking outside Edinburgh pub Iona Bar

Police in Edinburgh broke up a party of 50 drinking outside a closed pub at the weekend.

The group drank and mingled with each other outside the Iona Bar on Easter Road with no regard for social distancing rules.

Police officers broke up the illegal gathering just after 4pm on Saturday, as the drinkers were not complying with government lockdown measures.

A passer-by, said: “There were probably about 40 to 50 people gathered there when I walked past.

“They certainly weren’t social distancing, a lot of them were just mingling with each other and drinking as if they were at the pub.

“I saw a couple of people filming and a few men started to get quite verbally aggressive.

“I understand someone had reported them to the police.”

Under the Scottish Government’s first phase of lockdown easing, people are allowed to meet outside with one other household, in a group of no more than eight, while maintaining social distancing.

Mass gatherings are still not permitted due to the risk of coronavirus cases rising again.

Yesterday we told how groups had been gathering outside Canny Man's in Morningside to drink.

A police spokesman said: “We received a report of people gathering outside a pub on Easter Road around 4.05pm on Saturday, 6 June, 2020.

“Officers attended, dispersed the group and advice was given.”
