Police break up children's birthday party and engagement bash being held in breach of coronavirus rules

Police broke up a children's birthday party and an engagement bash which were being held in breach of coronavirus restrictions.

GMP said officers found three families in a private garden in Swinton, celebrating a child's birthday.

They also went to a house in Rochdale, where people were celebrating an engagement.

In both cases the homeowner was fined.

Legislation introduced to enforce the regulations allow police to fine people £100 with a fixed penalty notice.

GMP tweeted on Friday night: "Officers attended a property in #Swinton where 3 families were celebrating a child's birthday in a private garden. The homeowner has been issued with a fixed penalty notice."

Another tweet read: "Officers have dispersed an Engagement party in #Rochdale. The occupant was given 30 minutes to disperse attendees and the homeowner was issued with a fixed penalty notice."

Restrictions on social gatherings remain in force across Greater Manchester, as concerns remain about the level of cases across the region.

At the end of last month, the Government announced that across Greater Manchester people from different households would not be able to meet indoors.

There are exceptions, including for those within a support bubble.

Under the rules people can still go to pubs or restaurants, but only with members of their household or support bubble.

They allow people from two different households to meet outdoors in a public space such as a park, if social distancing is observed.

This does not apply to private gardens, where meetings between different households are prohibited.

More stringent lockdown measures were imposed in Oldham today, after the town had recorded the highest amount of cases in the country.

Now Oldham residents are not allowed to meet with members of other households anywhere, even outside in public places.

People are being advised to only use public transport for essential journeys, such as work or school.

Conversely, residents in Wigan are set to be released from the wider lockdown measures imposed across Greater Manchester last month.

More businesses will be able to open in the town from Wednesday, after weeks of low infection rates.
