Police brace for 'busy' weekend as conditions imposed for pro-Palestine protest

Police are preparing for a “busy” weekend in the capital, with Christmas shoppers, market visitors and a pro-Palestine march all expected as the festive season gathers pace.

Conditions have been imposed on a protest organised by the Palestine Coalition, which will assemble in Piccadilly at midday before moving through Piccadilly Circus to Haymarket and Cockspur Street.

A rally will follow and must take place in Whitehall, concluding by 5pm.

Police said the measures were introduced to “minimise the risk of serious disruption”.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dr Alison Heydari, who is leading this weekend’s policing operation, said: “Ahead of the weekend we have been in discussion with the Palestine Coalition, as well as partners, residents, businesses, faith and community groups who we know continue to be impacted by protests.

“We expect this weekend to be very busy with people shopping during the Black Friday sales, and visiting the capital, including Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. We have worked with organisers to seek to minimise disruption and balance the right to protest.

“Officers will be visible along the protest route and around the wider area to ensure the events take place safely.”

Police reiterated their commitment to protecting people’s lawful right to protest while minimising the impact of such large-scale events on London’s communities.

It comes as the city has seen a wave of demonstrations in recent months, including pro-Palestine marches, anti-immigration protests and, this week, a farmers’ protest.
