Man charged over sexual assault of child and mother at knifepoint during break in

Police from the canine unit were brought in to help search for the man.

A man accused of holding a girl under 13 and her mother at knifepoint before sexually assaulting both of them during a break in has been charged with 16 offences, which also include alleged attacks on two other girls over a two-day period.

Rami Johnathon Rahman, 36, was arrested late on Monday night after a four-day search around Broome.

He made a brief appearance in the Broome Magistrates Court this morning and was remanded in custody.

In a statement released prior to his court appearance, police said Mr Rahman was found hiding in a bathtub in a vacant house in Cable Beach.

Police Dog Hank was deployed inside the house, and he was arrested without incident.

Multiple offences alleged

Police have charged Mr Rahman with sixteen separate offences, spread over three alleged attacks over last Wednesday and Thursday.

The 36-year-old is alleged to have gained entry to a home in Broome on Wednesday evening, where a teenage girl woke to find him on her bed.

Police say the girl screamed and ran to alert a family member, while Mr Rahman fled the scene.

In the second incident police say another girl, also aged under 18, was woken up by Mr Rahman lying on the bed next to her and attempting to remove her clothes.

Police allege she and other people at the property told Mr Rahman to leave.

Mr Rahman is then alleged to have broken into the home of a 30-year-old woman, and threatened the woman and her daughter, who is under 13 years old, with a knife, before sexually assaulting both of them.

Speaking prior to Mr Rahman's arrest, Kimberley Inspector Rohan Ingles said both victims were taken to hospital and had been left traumatised by the attack.

"They're struggling, but they're doing the best they can given the circumstances," he said.

Mr Rahman is due back in court in July.
