Police blitz in Everton Park after firework mayhem

Police have been granted special powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in north Liverpool.

Merseyside Police have said they believe groups of people are set to gather illegally in the Everton Park area this weekend, and so have created a dispersal zone.

The order gives the police the power to break up groups of people and seized vehicles they suspect are being used illegally.

In late September there were reports that yobs were gathering in Everton Park and letting off fireworks in the direction of homes.

A woman who asked not be named told the ECHO: "This group of kids shows up in the evening, usually around 6pm, and stay up to around 10pm. Sometimes there is 10 of them, sometimes 20, sometimes 30.

"They have had enough fireworks to do a professional display twice over - they must have robbed a factory or be receiving them from someone illegally.

"They are lighting them in their hands and throwing them at each other. They must have no sense, I don't understand it... it's terrifying."

Councillor Jane Corbett, who represents Everton ward and lives in the area, said she had raised her concerns with the police.

This weekend's dispersal zone covers the area within: Hayworth street, Everton Road, Plumpton Street, Parkside Street, Gregson Street, Kinder Street, College Street North, Shaw Street, Prince Edwin Street, Great Homer Street, Buckingham Street, Conway Street, Netherfield Road North, Hapton Street, Dukes Road, York Terrace and Northumberland Terrace.

The order comes under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour & Policing Act 2014, which gives police officers and police community support traffic officers powers to direct people they suspect are causing or likely to cause crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour to leave a designated area and not return for up to 48 hours.
