Police blast sunbathers spotted swimming in Wigan quarry where two teenagers were killed

Police have blasted sunbathers spotted swimming in a Wigan quarry which claimed the lives of two teenagers.

East Quarry in Appley Bridge, a village which straddles Wigan and and West Lancashire, is a regular attraction for people during hot summer days.

But the quarry is private land and those gaining access are breaking the law, as well as putting their welfare at risk, say police.

The steep inclines and drops around the quarry can cause serious injury, along with the cold water which can result in swimmers going into shock within minutes, according to the emergency services.

The quarry was recently brought back in to use, making it even more dangerous for those who decide to trespass.

In 2015, 13-year-old Miracle Godson, a promising young rugby player from Wigan, died after getting into difficulties in the quarry’s deep waters.

In 1999, 17-year-old Craig Croston drowned at the site after, also getting into trouble in the water.

As the UK heatwave continues, Skelmersdale Police issued a warning today (July 20), slamming those using the 'unsafe option to cool off'.

In a Facebook post, the force said: "It's another scorcher of a day, meaning we are seeing people turning up to the quarry in Appley Bridge.

"The quarry is an unsafe option to 'cool off' from the heat. Not only because of the steep inclines and drops, but because of cold water shock which occurs within three to fives minutes of entering waters like these.

"The quarry is private land and by entering the grounds you will be trespassing.

"We want people to enjoy this spell of sunshine but please be responsible and do it in a safe environment.

"Thank you."
