A motorist crashed into a metal fence after allegedly going out for a drive when they were "bored", creating more work for emergency services during the coronavirus pandemic.

Police said the driver was making a non-essential journey in Chelmsford, Essex, on Thursday.

The Ford Fiesta user allegedly went out on a trip because they were bored during the lockdown, police said.

The incident took place at a time when police and ambulance staff are under increased pressure to keep services going amid the Covid-19 strain.

Essex Roads Policing Unit South wrote on Twitter: “Driver of this car was bored so went out for a drive!

“Us and the ambulance crew are both really busy and don’t need extra work.

“Another person breaching the regulations."

The force went on to urge the nation to comply with lockdown regulations to allow emergency services to help those who need it most.

“Please don’t [ break lockdown] please stay home," Essex Roads Policing Unit South added.

“Driver has been reported.”
